During the Indian summer season and monsoon rains, thoughts turn to the festival season, which is highlighted by Diwali. All are welcome to celebrate this important date in the Hindu calendar. Also known as the festival of lights, is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika (between mid-October and mid-November) One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.

There is a link between the festival and the Ramayana epic, in which Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman return to Ayodhya after 14 years in exile after Rama's army of good defeated the army of evil. As much as celebrating religious rituals and sharing traditional stories is a part of the festival, Diwali is also the time to spruce up the home, purchase new clothes, and arrange parties and feasts.

On Diwali night, most Hindus offer prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the god representing good fortune and wisdom for the coming year. Sweetmeat offerings are placed before the deities as the religious ceremony concludes, and diyas, small clay lamps, are placed inside homes and outdoors. Ideally, these twinkling lamps will attract Lakshmi's attention and lead her to blessings and prosperity. People also decorate their houses with flowers, rangolis, kandils and make sure that the house is absolutely clean and tidy looking spic and span.

I mean don’t we all love Diwali also because we get to wear our absolutely favorite clothes, jhumkas chappals, and look absolutely extra and festive? A very significant part of any celebration, be it a Hindu festival or Islamic (Eid) is getting decked up, looking more presentable than our usual days primarily to feel and to show that today is a much more important and special day than usual.

With all of these festivities comes the excitement of attending lots of functions, and parties wearing your favorite dresses and footwear. I mean we’re all guilty of loving the festival so much because we get to dress up and get glammed up only once a year! So, with this festival being round the corner another thing that we need to be prepared with is our outfits, accessories, chappals everything. Choosing something that’s festive-appropriate but also functional for the event is something that should definitely be on your mind.

Men generally wear kurtas and salwar with ethnic chappals or mojaris. Naturally, women have a more elaborate way of dressing up and more varieties to choose from. Elderly women generally dress up in a saree or a complete dress with dupattas, bangles, and beautifully embellished sliders. Young girls generally wear lehenga choli or shararas with math bindi, glamorous danglers, and super fashionable bellies, sandals, or even heels.

We buy something new at Diwali. Why restrict ourselves to only new jewelry or home décor?

This is the time we greet people with gifts and buy new things for our home. Choosing the right outfit and footwear at the time of Diwali is also extremely important as you’re around lots of fire and rangolis a lot of time because you don’t want to wear something that is prone to catching fire so why not put a little bit of thought in it and even consider gifting your loved ons well-thought clothes, footwear, and bags?

Also because it’s a festival and there’s so much work and chaos the entire day no one wants to wear anything that might hurt their feet too much or cause them discomfort.

This is why choosing a fabric like cotton is preferable compared to chiffon or net as they’re more likely to burn faster if caught fire. Similarly for someone who has to remove and wear their footwear very often something like mules or sliders would be ideal. But, if you’re outdoors and have to run around a lot choosing a pair of comfortable sandals or open gladiators that are secure from the front and the ankle would be ideal.

If the function is simple like a pooja or aarti you generally do not wear any footwear but if you get dressed to be at someone’s place for pooja something like simple braided sandals would be appropriate, neither is it boring nor is it too dangly just right for the vibe of the room. If the occasion is something like a Diwali party wearing something a bit more glamorous would be the plan, if that’s the case we have our stunning embellished sliders and t-strap sandals to suit the occasion.

Well, if the occasion is bursting crackers or running around here and there going for something with good ankle and good overall foot support would be ideal, choose anything that has a more closed back and front design so you don’t lose grip, bellies or gladiator sandals either of them wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Lastly on the day that is Lakshmi Pooja or Bhai Dooj choose anything that goes the best with your outfit aesthetic. It could be sandals or mules or even stilettos if that’s what you like.

The most essential thing admits all of this should be understanding the symbolism of the festival, understanding Diwali and its meaning in its true sense. Learning good values, saying yes to better opportunities, and doing good for yourself and others around you should be your priority! Diwali is the time for happiness, prosperity, and symbolism of good over evil. This is why it is extremely important to learn good values, stick around families, forget all the enmities, pray and wish well for everyone, and lastly of course enjoy themselves to the fullest. So go grab your favorite outfits and footwear and be all set to rock this festival!
